New Albany, MS – 4/18/2013 – Biscuits & Jam Farmers’ Market on the Tallahatchie Riverbank starts its second year Saturday, May 18 with a plant sale by the Union County Master Gardeners. The market will be open every Saturday through August 31st from 7 am to 10 am. Eligible growers will also be allowed to sell on any given day as produce is available. Sponsors, Sugaree’s Bakery and High Point Coffee will be providing free biscuits and coffee to the 1st 100 people. There will be live local music each Saturday. Tallahatchie Yoga will have Community Yoga every Saturday at 9 am on site. The market will sell only locally grown produce, processed farm goods, canned fruits and vegetables, home baked goods and local hand-made crafts. No live animals will be sold.

The Market will also host 2nd Saturdays: Folk Art on the River each 2nd Saturday June through August. Hours will be extended on 2nd Saturdays until 12 pm. Local folk artists will have their art for sale. Artists can pick up vendor applications at Sugaree’s Bakery. There will be a Wee Folk Hour from 10 am to 11 am. Activities for the kids will include a guided nature walk through the Arboretum with Sherra Owen, storytelling by the Tallahatchie River Players and a folk art craft. Each 2nd Saturday at noon, the Extension Office will conduct Agri-Tours to local farms. There will also be a Pickers’ Art Contest and live Bluegrass.

Biscuits & Jam will provide the theme for the art contests along with a background board and glue. Participants can use found items and items purchased at local antique and 2nd hand stores only. A map of participating antique & 2nd hand stores will be available at the market. Participating stores will open at 7 am for this event. Once participants have found items and made their purchases, they return to the market and create their art. The judging will be at noon by a local folk artist. Winners will receive Main Street Money good at dozens of New Albany businesses. Participants can pick up an application at Sugaree’s Bakery or at the Market the day of contest.

Eligible growers and vendors must pay a $25.00 seasonal marketing fee. This year you may reserve a space for just one Saturday for $10.00. Grower applications and rules can be picked up at the Union County Extension Office or Sugaree’s Bakery. Certificates of application must be visibly displayed while selling at the market.
