This event is of interest to the community since Jan Dijkwel is a world-renown ballet coach and choreographer. He is originally from the Netherlands. He trained and performed in Europe before moving to the US. He is a great advocate of excellent ballet and the arts in general. Art lovers need to know that someone of his caliber is living here and wants to share his talent and experience. All the company members are local high school girls who have dedicated themselves to ballet. They are hard working young ladies who want to share their talents as well.
In November, Civic Ballet hosted an Arts Showcase. We had local performing and visual artists participate. Of notable interest was Brent Funderburk who is a world-renown painter at MSU who exhibited some of his original pieces and some prints. A lot of his paintings have a dance theme since his wife is a dancer. It would be nice to do a story about this collaboration maybe, these 2 world famous artists living and working amongst us who want to freely share their talents. There was also some other great local talent at our showcase-Glenn Payne, Sylvain Chamberlain, Kit Stafford, Patricia Neely-Dorsey, students of Svetlana Kaltchenko from the THS orchestra, and Sarah Childers, an aspiring opera singer from Fulton.
Brent donated one of his watercolor prints to the Civic Ballet and exhibited a few more of his original pieces. We will be selling raffle tickets for his donated print at the performance in Feb and again at the spring recital in May. It will be given away during the spring recital of North Mississippi Dance Centre at which Civic Ballet will perform.
Please check out our website, www.civicballet.org . There are a couple of short videos that will give you more information. Anne Palmer of Palmtree Studios in Tupelo did a superb job of capturing what make Civic Ballet special.

This will be a great show! Civic Ballet has some of the best talent in North MS. You will leave loving ballet!!
