“Underground Railroad Quilt Stories”

Elizabeth Simpson, Sara Delaoch, and the ladies of her Columbus sewing circle will have several hand-sewn quilts telling the stories of the Underground Railroad to explain how people communicated during a difficult time in history. The quilts are full of secret codes known to those searching for freedom from the bondage of slavery. Other patterns were used to convey messages such as knots, stitches, and color choices. Bits of cloth made charms believed to have protective, magical powers.
