Free public events celebrate the 78th birthday of the King

TUPELO, Miss—Special events are scheduled in Tupelo and Memphis to celebrate Elvis Presley’s 78th birthday.

The celebration will begin Monday, January 7 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bijou Theatre at Graceland Plaza. Roy Turner, a Tupelo historian, and Elvis’ childhood friends, Sam Bell and Guy Harris, will share stories about Elvis’ time in Tupelo. The program will be facilitated by Memphis Jones and will include a screening of the film “Tupelove,” that plays as part of the Elvis’ Tupelo exhibit currently on display in the Bijou Theatre. A performance by the Tupelo Unity Choir will conclude the program. Tickets are free and are required for this event. They are available in Graceland’s ticket pavilion.

The celebration will continue Tuesday, January 8 in Elvis’ hometown of Tupelo. Birthday cake will be available at the Elvis Presley Birthplace at 1:00 p.m., and will be followed by the premiere of the Tupelo Unity Choir video in the Elvis Presley Birthplace Theatre. The film was commissioned by the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau, and was created by Roy Turner and John Wee. Immediately following the video, the Tupelo Unity Choir will perform.

“Elvis was greatly affected by the blues and southern gospel music that he heard as a child in Tupelo. We commissioned this video to showcase the same music that was such a powerful force in Elvis’ success,” said Neal McCoy, executive director of the Tupelo Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The birthday celebration will culminate with the lighting of the Elvis’ Homecoming Statue, unveiled in August, in the Fairpark District at 5:30 p.m. The lights were donated locally by Philips Day-Brite. Mayor Jack Reed, Jr., representatives from Philips Day-Brite, and members of the Elvis Presley Fan Club will participate in the ceremony.
