COLUMBUS, Miss. – About 60 men, including Mississippi University for Women students and staff, city officials and Columbus Air Force Base representatives, will do their part to promote sexual assault awareness Thursday, April 4.
The W’s Counseling Center will host “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” the men’s international march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence. The event will begin at 4 p.m. at the Bryan Green Gazebo on campus. “April is sexual assault awareness month, and we want to promote sexual assault awareness on campus as well as in the community,” said Yvett Harris, MUW counselor.
A woman is raped every 90 seconds in America, according to Harris. Fifty-four percent of sexual assaults are never reported to the police and two out of three sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim.
Harris added, “Women need to be prepared and know what they can do to keep themselves safe. Men can assist as well by being advocates.”
Registered participants will pick up their shoes, and the walk will begin around 4:45 p.m. Jonelle Husain, a sexual assault survivor, is the featured speaker. Everyone is encouraged to come out and cheer on their participants to show support as they “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.”
In addition to campus participants, city officials such as the mayor, city councilmen, police chief and assistant fire chief will show their support by participating in the walk. Organizations including Safe Haven, a local domestic violence shelter, and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office at Columbus Air Force Base will participate.
