BOONEVILLE, Miss– Set the stage for a hot winter night of music by joining Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Campus Country for “Campus Country Showtime” February 16 in Seth Pounds Auditorium on the Booneville campus.

Since the show falls the week of Valentine’s Day, director Chris Dunn said it will feature a selection of love songs to celebrate the season, but it’s not strictly a ‘Valentine’s Show.’

“I’ve encouraged the singers to choose at least one love song for the occasion,” Dunn explained, “and thankfully, they’re not all about romantic love. Some celebrate familial love, while others tell stories of longing or love lost. Some of my favorites from this collection include ‘To Make You Feel My Love’ and ‘One and Only,’ both by Adele, ‘I’m Already There’ by Lonestar, ‘Like We Never Loved at All’ by Faith Hill, ‘Precious Love’ by James Morrison, and the country classic ‘Stand By Your Man’ by Tammy Wynette.

“We’ve had a few major changes to the group since the beginning of the school year,” Dunn continued. “Most of our veteran singers moved on to pursue other opportunities. Now, the group features seven first-year singers and a single veteran vocalist. I was a little worried when the semester began, but some of our younger members have really stepped up. I’ve seen tremendous growth and our vocal harmonies are sounding better than ever. Having fewer members has also allowed me to devote more attention to each member, and everyone is getting more singing time in every rehearsal.

“Our band has maintained the same line-up since the fall and they continue to impress me with their ability to learn quickly and adapt on the fly.”

To contrast the love song theme, Dunn also encouraged the singers to bring in some upbeat and fun material to give the show diversity.

“Some of my favorites from this group of tunes include ‘I Saw the Light’ by Wynonna, ‘Last Name’ by Carrie Underwood, ‘I’m In A Hurry’ by Alabama, and ‘Country Strong’ from the movie with the same title starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

“Ultimately, I’m excited for people to hear the ‘leaner and meaner’ Campus Country,” Dunn smiled. “We’ve lost some amazing singers, but we’ve also grown in the process. I’m looking forward to seeing where this semester takes us.”

Tickets are $5 and available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m. Northeast faculty, staff and students are admitted free with valid ID.
