NMMC to Celebrate with Heart Month Events

TUPELO, Miss.-North Mississippi Medical Center will celebrate American Heart Month with several activities during February.

The NMMC Heart Institute encourages everyone to wear red to show their support for women’s heart health on National Wear Red Day®, Friday, Feb. 1. Increase awareness by wearing a favorite red dress, red shirt, red tie or Red Dress pin. The observance urges women to protect themselves from heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women.

“Innovations in Heart Valve Replacement” will be presented at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the NMMC Wellness Center’s member lounge at 1030 S. Madison St.

On Feb. 13, current and former patients will be treated to a Cardiac Rehabilitation Breakfast at 9 a.m. in the Cardiac Rehabilitation kitchen, NMMC East Tower, third floor.

“Know the Warning Signs of a Heart Attack” will be presented at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the NMMC Wellness Center.

Heart Institute staff members will be in the NMMC front lobby from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, promoting “Know the Warning Signs and Know Your Numbers.”

NMMC’s Spirit of Women will sponsor a “Women in Red Luncheon” at noon Tuesday, Feb. 19, at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall as part of the Woman’s Place Lunchtime Learning Series. Cardiologist Barry Bertolet, M.D., will present “Don’t Miss a Beat,” focusing on the warning signs of heart attack and the importance of quick action. Free blood pressure and stroke screening will be offered before the luncheon. Lunch will be provided for $5 for those who preregister by Wednesday, Feb. 13, by calling 1-800-THE DESK (1-800-843-3375).

The NMMC Wellness Center will host “Pacemakers, Internal Defibrillators, Atrial Fib & More” at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20.

“Congestive Heart Failure” will be discussed at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the NMMC Wellness Center. In addition, participants will enjoy an “Eating for a Healthy Heart” taste testing.

Mended Hearts Chapter 97 meets at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, and the last Thursday of each month in Room 21 on the first floor of North Mississippi Medical Center’s East Tower. For more information, call president Ken Krason at (662) 844-6731.
