COLUMBUS, Miss. – One of five exhibitions scheduled this fall, “Share the Wealth: A Print Exchange Exhibition,” will open Monday, Sept. 16 in the Eugenia Summer Gallery at The W.
Department Chair Shawn Dickey will provide an overview of works and introduction to the exhibition in a gallery talk Thursday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. The public event will be followed by a 5:30-7 p.m. reception. The exhibition runs through Oct. 4.
In a print exchange, a number of artists are given a common theme, producing individual works that illustrate the theme. The resulting portfolio is shared among the participating artists. The W’s exhibition will feature five separate exchanges and display a mix of professional and student work, giving the viewer an opportunity to see the work of both professional and emerging artists.
Three of the exchanges are drawn from Dickey’s personal collection and will feature examples of his work, said Alex Stelioes-Wills, gallery director.
“We haven’t done a show of exclusively printmaking in a long time,” he said, “and this exhibition shows a huge variety of contemporary printmakers, some quite famous. It also shows a huge variety of techniques and media, including some very experimental approaches.”
Themes represented in the exhibition include “Earth, Wind, Fire and Water”; “Wild West Show”; “3 Dots 21”; “Dia de los Muertos”; and “Trailer Park.” Printmaking students at The W contributed works in the latter two.
The Eugenia Summer Gallery is located in the southwest corner of the MUW campus directly east of the Stark Recreation Center. The Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
