Local writer, director and producer Barbara Hardin-Welch will be presenting “Suffer the Little Children,” a stage play on the topic of child abuse to the New Albany Community Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. The stage performance features local actors and will be presented at the Magnolia Civic Center.

“In 1998, I was inspired to write a poem that addressed the alarming subjects of child abuse and child endangerment,” Hardin-Welch said. “In that same year, I realized that talking and expressing my views on the subject was not enough. Blessed with the insight to allow the public to view this matter as a stage production, I wrote, directed and produced the play, ‘Suffer the Little Children.’”

She said the stage play is intended to heighten the awareness of our surroundings and how our children are vastly becoming an endangered species. “Unfortunately, we live in times where nothing is sacred anymore; especially when it comes to the innocence of our children,” she said. “Our children are being preyed upon through physical and mental abuse. They are being subjected to drugs, which clutter our street at an alarming rate.”

Hardin-Welch said children are being left in hot cars and even home alone; with no food, clothes or shoes. “Children should never grow up in homes filled with strife and despair,” she said. “They need loving parents that will always be there. Our children are our future. What they see, they will do. Bad experiences, they may never forget.”

Cast members include Demetrius Anderson, Alexia Hayes, Taurse Harden II, Analisa Cheairs, Nykierra Green, Montez Howell, Tracy Harden, Terrance Metcalf, Arlesha Howell, Agnes Spears, Shandle Howell and Amanda Keys.

Tickets are $12 in advance for adults and $14 at the door; all children’s tickets are $8 at the door. Tickets are available at Kim and Margaret’s Beauty Shop, Hill’s Hair Design, Bradley’s Hair Fashions, Mr. Nobody’s Music and New Birth Community Church.
