The exhibit “Herb and Dorothy: A Glimpse into their Extraordinary Collection” will run through Oct. 18 in the McComas Hall gallery on the Mississippi State University campus.
The show features works from the contemporary collection gifted to the Mississippi Museum of Art by New York collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel. Primarily made up of drawings, the traveling exhibit includes works by highly regarded contemporary artists including Will Barnet, Claudia DeMonte, Cindy Sherman and Richard Tuttle.
Sponsored by the College of Architecture, Art and Design’s art department, the show will include a guided gallery talk Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. by Mississippi Museum of Art curator Beth Batton.
The Vogels began purchasing art in the 1960s, and by the 1990s, their collection numbered in the thousands. In recent years, the National Gallery of Art, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Institute of Museum and Library Services have worked with the Vogels to share the artworks with one institution in each of the 50 states.
MMA received 50 artworks, also including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints by significant contemporary artists, mainly working in the U.S.
