Work of Rachel Ballentine on display now in ICC Fine Arts gallery
Date(s) - 02/13/2013-03/08/2013
The pottery of Rachel Ballentine of Sardis will be on display at the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts gallery at the Itawamba Community College Fulton Campus until Mar. 8.
“I have always enjoyed working with my hands,” Ballentine said. “When I was given the gift to hand-build my vessels and stay close to nature to what I put on the outside, I listened and did as instructed. My hands and the clay work together to create my vessels. The clay tells me how to form each piece, so my vessels are one of a kind, built one at a time.”
Ballentine earned her undergraduate degree in education and an Air Force commission in the fall of 1977. In the summer of 1992, with two years of teaching experience, she returned to her Sardis home. After two years, she began work on her master’s degree at the University of Mississippi, and during this learning experience she took a course in beginning ceramics. Ballentine earned master’s degrees in education and art education in the summer of 2000. She has been a potter since the summer of 1999.
Ballentine’s work has been exhibited in the American Craft Council show, American Women Expo and Black Women Expo, all in Illinois. She has also exhibited work in museums and galleries across Mississippi and in Tennessee. She is one of seven artists chosen to create the “Highway 61 Project” that was exhibited at the George Ohr Museum in Biloxi. Ballentine is a member of several art organizations and a board member for the Mississippi Alliance for Arts Education, field adviser for the Whole School Initiative through the Mississippi Arts Commission and was recently inducted as a member of the Mississippi Artist Roster. A member of the board of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, she has conducted workshops for teachers and students from the Mississippi Gulf Coast to Olive Branch.
All of her work is for sale, and the prices are listed on labels in the Gallery.
The gallery is open to the public from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., weekdays. For more information contact Shawn Whittington at email@example.com or (662) 862-8301.
