VERONA, Miss. – (WCBI) Parents of pre-school children in Verona hoping to give their kids a jump start for kindergarten learned about a valuable resource.

Verona Elementary is one of the homes of the Excel by 5 Resource center which provides children from birth to age 5 the chance to get their brains accustomed to learning.

Principal Temeka Shannon says studies show that children that are exposed to a structured educational environment perform academically better than their peers who do not have an opportunity to attend extra-structured or preschool type settings.

“Being exposed to different types of manipulatives, such as blocks or math manipulatives, like counting manipulatives really stimulates the brain. And we’re just trying to get our students ready for Common Core so that they can be competitive,”says Shannon.

The Excel by 5 program even provides very young children an interactive computer to use. A 12-thousand dollar Carpenter Grant provided materials for the center which is easily accessible to young children in Verona, Shannon, and Plantersville.
