COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It won’t be long before the blazing Summer sun beats down on Mississippi.

Your kids will be begging you to take them to the pool, lake or beach.

But, sun damage suffered in childhood can have devastating effects down the road.

Monday (5-6)  was Melanoma Monday.

To mark the occasion, Dr. Bethany Hairston, of the Dermatology Clinic in Columbus, spoke to first graders at New Hope Elementary and Annunciation Catholic about protecting the skin they are in.

Dr. Hairston says, ” It’s really important to educate kids early so they can get in good habits, and so I am hopeful that they will go home and tell their families about what they learned today about how to be safe in the sun.”

Dr. Hairston also advises people to keep a close eye on their moles. Sudden changes could be a sign of skin cancer.
