First Day a Big Jump for 9th-Grader, Family

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) COLUMBUS, Miss. – It’s the first day of school for many kids in the Golden Triangle, and it can be a big transition – especially if they’re starting high school.

Wednesday was no ordinary first day of class for Tori Weir – it was her first day of high school.

“It feels so surreal at the beginning, but now I’m ready,” Tori said.

She says she’s excited, but still a little nervous. It’s a big transition.

“My mom gets onto me about that, not being responsible,” Tori said. “I’m trying to prove to her I can do it, since I’m going into high school.”

“She’s going to be there with upperclassmen – 10th, 11th, 12th graders – so I’m a little bit concerned, but I know she can handle it,” said Jacklyn Weir, Tori’s mother.

Like any parent, Jacklyn wants Tori to have the best education possible.

She says the key is to balance both her school work and extracurricular activities.

“That is the main thing, to prepare for college, because that’s the next step in her career, and to stay focused,” Jacklyn said. “In high school you can easily become distracted. There is a lot of other stuff that you can get into.”

While at Columbus High, Tori says she plans to follow her passion of playing basketball, and hopes to discover even more.

“If you have a passion for something, don’t give up, and give God the glory in everything you do,” Tori said.

She says she looks forward to meeting new people, and learning as much as she can.
