Gershon Stepping Down at UM Law

OXFORD, Miss. — University of Mississippi School of Law Dean Richard Gershon announced Wednesday his plans to return to full-time teaching June 30, at the close of his fifth year as dean.

“I have had the opportunity to think back about my many years as dean here and at other universities, and it became clear to me that my first love is teaching and the time spent with law students, and I miss it,” Gershon said.  “I’m very happy to be able to do what I love most at the university I’ve grown to love.”

University Provost Morris Stocks said Professor Deborah Bell will assume the role of Interim Dean until a national search for a new dean is completed.

“Dean Gershon is dearly loved by the law school faculty and our law students, and I know everyone respects his decision and welcomes his return to full-time teaching,” Stocks said.

Prior to joining the UM School of Law faculty, Gershon was founding dean of the Charleston School of Law. He also served as dean of Texas Wesleyan University School of Law and on the faculty and as the academic associate dean at Stetson University School of Law.

Gershon is a graduate of the University of Georgia (BA 1979), the University of Tennessee (JD 1982), and the University of Florida (LLM Taxation 1983). He is the author of several books and articles on taxation and legal education and is a co-author contributing annual updates to Attorney Client Privilege in The United States. He is a member of the Florida and Georgia Bars.
