Gov. Bryant Appoints Nowell as County Court Judge of Bolivar County

JACKSON, Miss. (Press Release) — Gov. Phil Bryant has appointed W. Hunter Nowell as county court judge of Bolivar County. A vacancy will occur when Judge Gwendolyn J. Thomas resigns effective April 30, 2014.

“I thank Judge Thomas for her service and appreciate her dedication to the people of Bolivar County,” Gov. Bryant said.

Nowell practices law with Povall & Jeffreys, P.A. in Cleveland, Miss., specializing in real estate, civil litigation, family law, criminal defense, social security and collections. He has represented the Town of Merigold since January 2009. Nowell also serves as a public defender, representing indigent criminal defendants in municipal court in Cleveland, Rosedale and Ruleville and in Bolivar County Justice Court.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Mississippi and earned a juris doctorate degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law. He is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association and the Bolivar County Bar Association. He is licensed to practice in all courts in Mississippi, including U.S. District Court, Northern District of Mississippi; U.S. District Court, Southern District of Mississippi; and the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. He is an active member of First United Methodist Church in Cleveland and the Cleveland Rotary Club.

“Hunter is a bright young lawyer who comes highly recommended by his peers in the legal profession,” Gov. Bryant said. “I appreciate his desire to serve the public and am confident he will be an excellent judge.”
