COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Competitors participated in an amateur and professional competition for best chicken, ribs, and pork. Barbeque on the River is a Columbus tradition that gives a portion of their proceeds to local organizations. This year the Lowndes County Humane society was chosen to receive financial aid for their new building.

“Sometimes there’s not a lot to do in a small town, especially in the Spring. You want as many things as you can do to bring the kids and bring the family. Just to have fun with your friends and no be cooped up in the house. It means a lot, it’s very important to our community,” said Elton Thomas, Columbus resident.

Humane Society board member Charlotte Hardy appreciates the donations from Grilling on the River.
“Where the animals where was like third world country sort of thing. But this facility is state of the art. I encourage everyone to go out and take a look and see what all we’ve done. It is a magnificent building.”

The Humane Society is expecting their building to be completed on July first.
