High School Basketball Scores 3.8.13

Jasmine Bush scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and Southeast Lauderdale held on to defeat Charleston 63-59 in the girls Mississippi 3A state championship game.It’s the Lady Tigers’ first state title since 2008 and fourth in school history.

Bush was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Anitra Ruffin scored 18 points — all in the first half — and Crystal Clay added 10.

Southeast Lauderdale (33-2) shot 58 percent from the field while Charleston (26-6) made just 36 percent of its shots.

Charleston’s Mary Washington led her team with 20 points. Alexis Ross added 12 points for Charleston.

Boys 3A championship

Velma Jackson beats Booneville 45-44

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Moses Greenwood scored 15 points as Velma Jackson edged Booneville 45-44 to claim the boys Mississippi 3A state championship at Mississippi Coliseum on Friday afternoon.

Velma Jackson (27-8) trailed by seven points going into the fourth quarter, but rallied for the first state title in school history.

Quinndary Weatherspoon added 11 points for the Falcons. Greenwood was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Jack Nichols led Booneville (28-6) with a game-high 18 points. Kenny Paul Geno added 11 points for the Blue Devils, who reached the state championship game for the third straight season, winning the title in 2011.

Girls 4A championship

Bay High tops Pontotoc 65-42 for 4A title

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Terrica Williams scored 18 points, Christa Reed added 17 and Bay High capped an undefeated season by beating Pontotoc 65-42 to claim the girls Mississippi 4A state championship on Friday night.

Bretta Hart also scored 15 points for the Lady Tigers (36-0), who captured their third state championship and first since 2005. Williams shot 8 of 13 from the field and added 11 rebounds. Bay High shot 24 of 50 (48 percent) from the field.

Pontotoc shot just 29 percent from the floor in the second half and 32 percent for the game.

Lanikki McMillian and Anna Rosenbaum led the Lady Warriors (31-4) with nine points each. Pontotoc captured the 4A state title last year.

Boys 4A championship

Final: Amanda Elzy 59, Corinth 41
