Houlka Aldermen Look to Fill $100,000 Deficit

HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) — Street lights aren’t going out, and police won’t stop patrolling the streets. But Houlka city leaders are having to do some serious belt tightening.

The city has listed its town hall — the former Bancorpsouth building — for sale as part of an effort to make up a $100,000 deficit in the budget that just ended.

Aldermen also slashed workers’ salaries and insurance to save $78,000, and hope they’ll have the deficit made up within three or four months.

City Clerk Gay Williams resigned over the lack of financial management. Janie Tutor has been named to fill the spot, which handles day-to-day financial management for the Chickasaw County town.
