HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) — The town of Houlka wants to become known as the cornbread capital of America.

The Houlka town square was alive with activity as the skies cleared a bit and visitors could enjoy music, and some congregated at the Houlka volunteer fire department.

But the main event took place at His Grace Ministries. For $5 you could judge the various cornbread samples submitted by the best cooks in Chickasaw County.

Organizers say the event has really grown since last year, because of the use of social media to get the word out.

“It just kind of made itself,” said event coordinator Tina Pullen. “When we decided to do this last year, I put it on Facebook and as soon as I put it Facebook, I started getting like after like after like and it just grew so big. We only planned this last year in about four weeks and this year we’ve worked on it for a whole year, and it has really turned out even though the weather’s been bad, it has really turned out great.”

Participants at the Cornbread Festival got a chance to judge three different types of cornbread – regular, Mexican or specialty.

While some paid $5 to judge, others just paid to eat cornbread, along with some delicious chili to mix it with.

It was a good way for the people of Houlka to come together.

“We’re just a close knit community,” said Cornbread coordinator Rene Brown. “And we’re trying to better this town, bring some business into town and held improve our community and this is just a good way to do it.”

People came from surrounding towns to enjoy some Houlka hospitality.

In fact, a group of professors from the University of Alabama came off the Tanglefoot Trail bike path to grade the cornbread.
