Houston Officials Look to Bolster Tourism Traffic

HOUSTON, Miss. (WCBI) — Houston city leaders are studying ways to take advantage of visitors attracted by the Tanglefoot Trail and furniture and sweet potato industries.

One possibility is a 2-percent restaurant and hotel tax like those in Pontotoc, New Albany, Fulton, West Point and several other area towns.

Revenue could be used for facilities to attract even more people to the 44-mile bike trail to local parks.

Hotel taxes generate between $2,000 – $4,000 for towns the size of Houston. Taxes on restaurant food add another $10,000.

Houston leaders say they want a specific plan for the revenue before taking the idea to city residents.
