MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) – With millions suffering from Alzheimer’s, Golden Triangle residents are looking to change the future of the disease.

More than 200 participants gathered at the EMCC campus, Sunday, for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s 5K.

The walk kicked off with a special promise garden ceremony to honor those with the disease, those who’ve passed away, and support those caring for victims of the disease.

Event organizers hope the walk will not only raise awareness and funds, but also aid in finding a cure for Alzheimer’s.

“Alzheimer’s disease is something people don’t like to talk about, it’s the ‘A’ word,” said walk specialist Rachel Ruello. “It’s labeled as crazy or what not, and so we’re trying to change that. And it’s a disorder, so we are trying to raise awareness and help find a cure.”

This year, the 5K teams and individual participants raised more than $7,000.
