COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Two years after opening, some old signs bring a familiar message back to the hallways at Columbus Middle School.

Students returning to school next week will be greeted by large “In God We Trust” signs that were part of a controversial move by the state almost 12 years ago. In 2001, the Legislature mandated the signs be put up in every school classroom. When the new middle school opened two years ago, the signs didn’t make the move from the old Lee Middle School.

“The district was called in reference to the posters because it is mandated by the state. It is a law that was mandated and of course the district is going to follow the law and that is why it was nice to put them up in every classroom,” CMS Principal Freda Dismukes said of an inquiry that reminded the district about the state mandate.

When the law passed, the American Family Association paid for 32,000 signs for school classrooms statewide.
