COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — “In My Shoes” is a disability awareness program designed for children to explore the struggles children with disabilities face.

Junior Auxiliary members visit the classrooms of second graders and read stories to the students pertaining to down syndrome, cerebral palsy, vision/ hearing impairment, and autism.

The students are also given the chance to experience the frustrations of a disability by working puzzles while blindfolded or touching braille books.

The program has been reaching out to elementary schools in the community for several years.

Junior Auxiliary member Angie McCoy said, “To make sure that all kids fit in, and that the other kids that don’t have disabilities empathize with the children that do and included them in the activities so no one is left out because all kids want to make friends.”

Junior Auxiliary members hope students will become more understanding and accepting of students with limitations by experiencing what it feels to be in their shoes.
