UNDATED, Miss. (WCBI)-This week marks the tenth anniversary of the War In Iraq.

That war was costly in terms of dollars and lives lost, some from right here in North Mississippi.

A decade has passed since the members of the U. S. military invaded Iraq.

The war may be over, but for soldiers who were deployed to that region, it remains fresh on their minds.

“Yeah, I think about it, and its going to be a part of my life for the rest of my life,” said Trinity Bush, Iraq War Army Veteran.

“First of all it kinda, hard to believe ten years went that quick,” said Corey Deer, Iraq war Army Veteran.

“The first thing that comes to my mind wasn’t over my tour. It was where I was at when the towers got hit. I remember I was in junior high,” said William bean, Iraq war Army Veteran.

At the onset of Operation Iraqi Freedom, coalition forces dethroned dictator Saddam Hussein.

Thousand of U.S. Troops were placed in harms way, as the search was on for weapons of mass destruction.

“We were pretty much fighting every day. Roadside bombs all the time. Bases getting mortared and rocketed,” said Deer.

“Things I had to deal with were mortar rounds.  We got hit by mortar every couple of days. So we were lucky enough that they didn’t get lucky and hit us,” added Bean.

Some were hit, and too many indeed lost their lives.. but in spite of the toll war has taken on returning troops by way of high divorce rates, PTSD, loss of limbs, and such: the veterans we spoke with, say they are better for serving their country.

“Got a lot more respect for life now. Lost a lot of good friends over there and made me grow up,” said Deer.

“Every semester has been great. Nothing but A’s and B’s, just a few C’s. I’m doing a lot better than I was before I left,” said Bean.

“We continue to do what we can wherever we are needed. Any day, any hour,” said Bush.

On 15 December 2011, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta officially declared the Iraq War over, at a flag lowering ceremony in Baghdad.
