Jail Land Need Rezoning

KOSCIUSKO, Miss. (AP) – The Kosciusko Board of Aldermen will hold rezoning hearing on Feb. 5 on a portion of residential land to be used for new Attala County Jail.

The Star-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/VGJmiR) that part of the jail site is located inside the city limits on property zoned as residential.

Mayor Jimmy Cockroft and building inspector Brent Busbea have proposed rezoning the property to commercial

Cockroft says the jail is important to the city because city prisoners will be housed in it. Otherwise, he says the city would have to go somewhere else.

Board of Supervisors Attorney Scott Pickle says an attorney general’s opinion says the jail must be built within the city limits of the county seat.
