Jury Duty, It’s Your Duty

LOWDNES COUNTY, Miss. – Seating a jury in a high profile case can be a challenge, but it’s one that the court must meet.

In Lowndes County, 300 summons are typically sent out to get 120 people to show up. Often times, people have moved.

Other valid excuses include caring for a sick loved one.

If you place a call to the Circuit Clerk, they will usually work with you.

If you simply ignore the summons, you could be held in contempt of court and face a fine and up to 30 days in jail.

Your best bet is to show up on time, take it seriously and do your duty.

Judge Jim Kitchens presides n Mississippi’s 16th Circuit Court District.

He says,  ” If you want to live in good community and good society, you have to have good people, who have a stake in the community, to come up and hear the case. Jury duty is called jury duty for a reason. It’s your duty to come up and serve and be part of the judicial branch of government.”

Jury duty typically pays $25 dollars a day.

People are selected from the voter rolls.

You can expect a summons about every 2 years.
