STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Some North Mississippi elementary students are taking health class to a whole new level.

On Friday, fourth graders in Karen Holloway’s class at Henderson Ward Elementary learned about the heart.

But they didn’t just listen to a PowerPoint presentation. A local doctor dissected two sheep hearts right in front of them.

Holloway says students don’t usually get to dissect anything until they get to high school.

She says the goal of the lesson is to teach her students how to stay healthy early on in life.

“The heart, which is part of the circulatory system, is the major main organ for that system, and to live a long time, we need to keep that heart healthy,” Holloway said. “We’ve talked about that in class. What are the things we can do?  Exercise, eat right.”

“It was interesting because it showed how all the veins worked and all the arteries, how they’re all connected, and the different types of blood vessels,” said student Christopher Bell.

Holloway says this is the first time she’s had a doctor come in to do a hands-on lesson like this, and she hopes it can happen again for her class next year.
