Lady Rebels Fall to No. 12 Georgia, 73-54

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI/Ole Miss Athletics)  — The Ole Miss women’s basketball team fell to No. 12 Georgia 73-54 Sunday afternoon.

Ole Miss guard Valencia McFarland dominated the stat column on Sunday but couldn’t get the Rebels over the top against Georgia.

With the loss Ole Miss fell to 9-18 overall (2-12 SEC) while No. 12 Georgia improved to 23-4 overall (11-3 SEC).

Valencia McFarland led Ole Miss with nine points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Diara Moore and Gracie Frizzell each finished with nine points. As a team, Ole Miss ended the game with seven threes, including three from Frizzell.

“I feel like we dug ourselves in an early hole with a 13-point deficit to start the game,” head coach Brett Frank said. “From that point on we played a 20-20 tie throughout the rest of the first half. In the second, we spotted them nine in a row and we dug ourselves a bigger hole and had to continue to battle throughout the rest of the game.”

Georgia got out to a quick 13-0 start but the Rebels used an 8-2 run from that point to cut the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to 15-8 with 12:01 to play in first half.

Georgia pushed its lead to 16, 29-13, with 3:08 left in the first half. At the half, the Lady Bulldogs led, 30-20. Frizzell led Ole Miss with six points while McFarland recorded four points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The Rebels shot 26.5 percent (9-34) from the floor in the first half while the Lady Bulldogs shot 41.2 percent (14-34).

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs shot 60.7 percent (17-28).

Ole Miss will host No. 7 Kentucky Thursday night at 7 p.m. on Senior Night. Prior to the game, Ole Miss’ two seniors, Courtney Marbra and Maggie McFerrin, will be honored.
