LaFayette County Joins Others in Raising Garbage Rates

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – Lafayette County residents and businesses will pay more garbage pickup service beginning Oct. 1.

The board of supervisors on Tuesday raised monthly fees for the county’s once-a-week residential pickup to $12. The last fee change was in 2000, when the rate went to $10 from $9, the price set when the service began in 1994.

Some 200 business customers, who pay based on the size of dumpsters they use, will pay 10 percent more.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports the price increase makes Lafayette County the median of the seven counties that constitute the Three Rivers Solid Waste Authority.

Officials say Union County’s fee is still $10, while Calhoun County charges $11 and Pontotoc County $10.

Monroe, Itawamba and Lee counties charge $13, $13, and $12.50, respectively.
