[jwplatform nHCeKEZ3]PONTOTOC, Miss. (WCBI) — Workers who were laid off when a local furniture factory closed received some help Friday.

Orientation sessions for employees laid off from Genesis Furniture in Pontotoc were held at the WIN Job Center.

Earlier this month, Genesis announced it was shutting down, leaving 64 employees out of work. During today’s sessions, workers were able to get advice and assistance on topics from job searches, job training and getting help with mortgage payments.

” I”ve been there so long, I’ve never had unemployment and all that and I wasn’t sure what all they had to offer and I didn’t know we could go back to school, get better job training, especially help with housing,” said former Genesis worker Hollie Kidd.

“We have a lot of employers who have announced they are hiring, we have advanced manufacturing looking for skills set that some of these employees might possess,” explained Gary Golden of Three Rivers Planning and Development District.>

Fortunately, employment assistance officials hope the rebounding furniture industry will be able to absorb the jobs lost at Genesis.

Officials point out that the assistance is available for those who didn’t make today’s orientation session.
