Lawsuit Battle with the Columbus Youth Council

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-Some new changes will be coming for the Columbus City Youth Council after a recent lawsuit.

Columbus Lawyer and parent Monigue Montgomery filed a lawsuit against Mayor Robert Smith and two others because her daughter wasn’t allowed to go to the state youth council meeting held in Hattiesburg this weekend due to violating group rules. After a number of witnesses took the stand at Friday’s trial the judge ruled that new changes be added to the youth council. Both sides believe the changes will be better for those in the future.

“I think it was a fair decision. I think it was clear they hadn’t set out any rules and she was being treated unfair,” says Monigue Montgomery.

“The judge said he would recommend for the future youth council in sometime in the future that we do have rules and that they would let kids sign and the parents sign them to have a record of it,” says Mayor Robert Smith

A judge from Jackson was brought in for the case.
