Lee County Man Gets New Hearing

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — A partial victory for a Lee County man seeking to have his capital murder conviction thrown out.

The Mississippi Supreme Court Thursday granted Justin Springer a hearing so he can argue he did not receive effective counsel during his two thousand 11 trial. Springer, who is currently serving a life without parole sentence for murder, wanted his entire case thrown out but justices stopped short of that.

Instead Springer will be given a new hearing where he can only argue whether his lawyer was negligent in seeking to raise a claim he was denied a speedy trial. No date for that hearing has been set.
