COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Local businesses are speaking out about President Obama’s proposal to raise the country’s minimum wage requirement.

At last week’s State of the Union Address, the President called for Congress to raise the nation’s minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $9 an hour. WCBI spoke to the owner of Christy’s Hamburgers in Columbus who says raising the amount will harm small businesses and employees across the country.

” I think it’s actually going to be very detrimental to small business. For instance with us that will mean that our labor cost are going to increase which in turn will actually hurt the employees because we will be able to pay but fewer hours. We make a profit and unfortunately as good of an idea as it may sound, it’s gonna hurt the workforce,” says Belk.

Obama argues that Nobody working full-time in this country should have to live in poverty.
