COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Next Thursday just wouldn’t be the same without the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year, the Turkey Day tradition will take on a local flavor.

Mary Helen Porter will be performing in this year’s Macy’s Day Parade.

“I’m just so excited. I never thought I’d be able to do this and it just blows my mind that I got chosen to do it,” says Porter.

Mary Helen along with Elelia Phillips and Eason Black will travel to New York next week to perform in this year’s Macy’s Parade.  It’s an opportunity of a lifetime.

“To be in the Macy’s Day Parade, if you went to camp, you had to be either a captain or co-captain of your cheer team. The other way was you could be chosen by a recruiter. We were chosen based on our leadership skills and our ability to perform dances and our sportsmanship,” says Phillips.

The girls are practicing hard at home but on parade day, they’ll need to be perfect.

Mary Helen, Elelia and Eason are the first cheerleaders from Lowndes County to be chosen to participate in the Macy’s Parade.

Game Time Head coach Adam Davis can’t wait to see the girls hit the big time.

“For me personally, it feels great. For the City of Columbus and the Golden Triangle area, I think it’s great to get exposure for out there, especially for our kids,” says Davis.

Darby Caviness, Anna Claire Watkins, Maria Inman and Casey Moss will also travel to Orlando to perform in the Thanksgiving Day Parade at the Disney World Resort.

The young ladies were also chosen as All-American cheerleaders at the UCA cheer camp.
