Former Publisher Dies

BELMONT, Miss. (AP) – Mariel Wayne Mitchell, a minister and former publisher of a weekly newspaper in Belmont died Monday in Tupelo after a long illness. He was 77.
The Mississippi Press Association announced Mitchell’s death in a news release Wednesday.
Mitchell, an Itawamba County native, was a minister in Florida, Alabama and several locations throughout Mississippi. He began his preaching career in 1957 at the Kosciusko Church of Christ.

Mitchell bought The Belmont and Tishomingo Journal from Delmus Hardin in August of 1976 and later The County Shopper. Also he owned KeMa Publishing.

Services are Thursday at 11 a.m. at Liberty Church of Christ in Dennis. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Fulton.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine; two sons; a daughter; and two brothers.
