MACON, Miss. (WCBI) — An early morning fire claims the life of a Macon man.

State Fire Marshals were called to the single family home next to Cedar Heights Apartments in Macon Friday morning. A man who lived there did not escape, he died in a blaze there around one thirty.

“Black male, age of 32 years old was found lying face down in the bedroom. And at the time, everything is under investigation by the Macon Police Department, Noxubee Coroner’s Office, and the State Fire Marshals,” said R. L. Calhoun, Noxubee County Coroner.

“Apparently the stove was left on. Occupant went asleep and the rest is history,” said Billy Whitehead, Macon Fire Chief.

There was little damage to the structure of the house, and preliminary investigation suggests that the victim may have been overcome by smoke.

“His name is Montreal Chandler,” said Calhoun.

“He was a nice guy because he used to come by my house. I used to talk with these young folks, I can’t keep up with their names. But my son is good friends of his. I’m a good friend with some of the family folk,” said Heywood Mitchell, Macon.

No one else was injured, and the victim was apparently the only one in the home at the time of the blaze.

An autopsy is being performed on the body, results are pending.
