Mail Processing Set To Leave Tupelo

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – Tupelo’s mail processing center is closing this week and the workload is being transferred to Memphis, Tenn.

The move is a part of the U.S. Postal Service’s effort to right its business model by consolidating processing centers.

USPS spokeswoman Enola Rice tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/ViPKhE ) that no one should notice a change in service.

A 2011 feasibility study showed the USPS could save $491,150 each year by closing Tupelo’s mail processing center and transferring the workload to Memphis.

Rice says in the process of closing processing centers, no USPS employee is being laid off.

The USPS Modified Network Realignment Plan projects to have completed consolidation of 140 locations by the end of 2013 to bring a total of $1.2 billion in savings.
