TUPELO, Miss. (Daily Journal) — The man charged with the murder of a Verona apartment complex owner was indicted by a Lee County Grand Jury last month.

Nathaniel Maurice Whitfield, 19, of Tupelo, was indicted on the charge of capital murder March 25.

Verona Police Chief Anthony Anderson said a man walked into the Bailey Apartments between 5:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Nov. 30, 2012, and fired multiple shots. Jeya “Jay” Suppiah, 46, owner of the apartments on Raymond Avenue, died after the shooting from a gunshot wound to the head.

Whitfield was arrested and formally charged Feb. 5, 2014, more than a year after the shooting.

A second person in the apartment office was shot that night and recovered from the wounds.

Whitfield was one of 159 people to be indicted by the March grand jury. The cases will be heard in the May term of the Lee County Circuit Court.
