Man Gets Five-Year Child Porn Sentence

Sumrall

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A 67-year-old Columbus man is sentenced to five years in prison for federal possession of child pornography

Noel Sumrall Jr. pleaded guilty to the federal charges back in March. Under federal sentencing guidelines, he faced a minimum of 78 months, but his attorneys asked for as little as 24 months. They said the retired federal employee was not a producer or distributor but only a user of the pornography, which he’d purchased over many years. They also said psychological tests suggested he was not likely to act out or get any worse.

A federal judge split the difference, opting for the 60-month sentence. It will run concurrent with a five-year sentence he received on state charges. Since Sumrall already has served part of the state time, it’s unclear whether he’ll later be transferred to a federal facility.

He also must serve 10 years on federal probation once he’s released.

He was arrested in December 2011 after state and local investigators hauled away crates of pictures during a raid on his home on Fifth Avenue North in Columbus.
