COLUMBUS, Miss. — A Columbus man loses everything he owns, including his pet pit bull, in an early morning house fire.

Calvin Staples was staying with his mother when fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. at the one-and-a-half story wood frame house he rented at the corner of 20th and College streets on Columbus’ Southside. The house was owned by Allen Redden.

Staples has been staying with his mother who recently suffered a stroke and heart attack and coming to the house each day to take care of his dog.

The fire was reported at about 3:30 a.m. and was fully involved when firefighters arrived minutes later. The fire appeared to have started in the rear of the home in a kitchen or bedroom but investigators were on the scene today trying to determine the actual cause.

Firefighters spent more than two hours fighting the fire and putting out hot spots because once the fire got into the wooden attic, it became hard to extinguish.
