MANTACHIE, Miss. (AP) — The town of Mantachie has banned e-cigarette and similar inhalers from public places.

Under the new ordinance, public e-cigarette and vapor inhaler use is forbidden inside local businesses and in or around town property like city hall and the park. E-smokers must be at least 25 feet away from the entranceway of a business.

A local newspaper reports the town board approved the ordinance this week.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that produce an odorless vapor which typically contains nicotine, and sometimes flavorings. E-cigarettes are often described as a less dangerous alternative to regular cigarettes that may help regular smokers quit. However, there hasn’t been much research on them yet.

Mantachie currently has no e-cigarette shops.

In 2006, Mantachie banned smoking in public places.
