MANTACHIE, Miss. (WCBI) — Due to an oversight in the original ordinance adopted by Mantachie, the city hasn’t been “smoke free” since 2008.

During a recent board of aldermen meeting, Mantachie Mayor Jeff Butler said he was alerted about the lapse of the anti-tobacco ordinance by a representative from the MSU Social Science Center.

The “smoking ban,” as it is often referred to, was enacted in 2006 and automatically ended two years later.

The ban limits public smoking to designated areas. Smoking indoors is not permitted.

The board voted unanimously to readopt the ordinance. It will go into effect after 60 days.

Punishment for violating the ordinance is a $250 fine for individuals.
