STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Monday’s storms caused many power outages in Starkville, due to snapped poles and damaged transmission circuits.

Just after the storms rolled through, the city looked like a blackout.

Most of the light came from cars, with residents driving to find a business open for dinner.

“They don’t have any electricity at home, and don’t really have anything to eat,” said resident Natasha Chen. “And if they were going to cook, they can’t really cook meals to eat. Most people are in my position trying to find something to eat.”

Chen says some restaurants were even out of food, because so many people were stopping there.

“I tried to go to Wendy’s first, but I had seen this strip is pretty much blacked out, so Subway had a light on. Tried to come in and get something to eat, but all they had was salads.”

The lights may have been out in many places, but Chen says she’s just glad the damage wasn’t worse – especially in her neighborhood.

“There were some trees falling in my neighborhood,” she said. “Not really any damage, just lots of leaves.”

Starkville Electric says it is making progress in restoring power, and hopes to have everything back on soon.
