TUPELO, MIss. (WCBI) — They basically work for free and every law enforcement agency that has them says they are the lifeblood of police work.

Wednesday, Tupelo honored its group of 28 reserve officers by naming Mike McClain Reserve Officer of the Year.

McClain works for Fed Ex during the day and then backs up the Tupelo Police Department in a reserve role during his off hours.

He completed the city’s 16-week part-time officer academy four years ago to fulfill a long-time dream of giving back to his community through law enforcement.

Reserve officers fill in on patrol, back up regular officers on calls and work special events.
