McGill Officially Interim Superintendent

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Edna McGill officially has been named interim Columbus schools superintendent but the school board remains deeply divided.

Under a contract approved this morning, McGill will serve until a permanent superintendent is named or until June 30, 2015.

Board member Aubra Turner was one of three votes for the contract but she suggested board members have been pressured with removal if they didn’t vote for an African-American.

And former board president Currie Fisher tackled the race issue and discord head on.

“Mrs. McGill is the same race as my grandfather and I love him. So race is not an issue and I think that intimidations by members of this board to intimidate other board members is offensive and should not be accepted by the public,” Fisher said.

McGill will make $135,600 a year. She’s been serving as temporary interim superintendent since Dr. Martha Liddell was fired in June.
