WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today said a $1 million federal grant has been awarded to support medical service delivery in tornado-damaged Louisville and Winston County.

Cochran was informed Wednesday that the Winston County Medical Foundation has been awarded a $1,093,074 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for costs associated with the temporary relocation of the Winston Medical Center and the temporary facility to house its healthcare functions. The medical center sustained heavy damage during the tornado that hit Louisville on April 28.

“FEMA is making this funding available as part of the rebuilding process for Winston County. The displacement of the medical center into temporary facilities is just one of the challenges created by the deadly storms that damaged a good part of Mississippi almost six months ago,” Cochran said.

The FEMA Public Assistance grant will be drawn from the Disaster Relief Fund, which Cochran has championed in his role on the Senate Appropriations Committee. It will cover 75 percent of the costs associated with this $1.4 million grant application.

The FEMA Public Assistance Grant Program provides assistance to states, communities, tribes and certain nonprofit organizations for response and recovery projects following major disasters or emergencies. These grants support work that involves the repair, replacement or restoration of damaged, publicly-owned facilities.

“I will continue to support local, state and federal rebuilding efforts in our state,” said Cochran, who serves on the Senate appropriations subcommittee with funding jurisdiction over FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security.

Following the April 28 storm, a national mobile disaster hospital was opened in Louisville for use until the Winston Medical Center is rebuilt.
