Melanson Joins MSU as Plant Pathologist

RAYMOND, Miss. (Press Release) — Rebecca Melanson recently joined the Mississippi State University Extension Service as a plant pathologist.

She will focus on disease management issues in fruits, vegetables and nuts.

“We are so pleased to have Dr. Melanson joining our Extension team at the Central Mississippi Research and Extension Center,” said Sherry Surrette, head of the center. “Our producers and landowners will greatly benefit from her diverse research background and expertise in plant disease management.”

Melanson, a native of Marrero, Louisiana, holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Centenary College of Louisiana.

She earned a master’s degree and doctorate in plant health with an emphasis in plant pathology at Louisiana State University. She is an active member of the Southern Division of the American Phytopathological Society.

Melanson said she looks forward to working with the region’s producers to develop an Extension program that is best suited to them.

“I am excited to join the MSU Extension Service and the Central Mississippi Research and Extension Center,” she said. “As a newcomer to Mississippi and to my position, my initial focus will be to meet my clientele and identify their disease management needs.”
