MHSAA Doesn’t Expel Private Schools, Expands Basketball Playoffs

(WCBI Sports) – The MHSAA has made a preliminary ruling on two issues Thursday in Clinton, Miss. At this time, private schools appear to still be a part of the association’s future, and the state basketball tourney may see more teams competing.

Those in favor of eliminating private schools like French Camp and TCPS from the MHSAA say the private schools have an unfair recruiting advantage. The proposal was dropped before reaching a vote Thursday. The private schools have been a part of the MHSAA since the 1960s. 13 schools would have been affected.

The proposal to expand the number of teams in the state basketball tournament was passed. A second vote will come in February. Starting in with the 2014-15 tournament, eight teams would advance to Jackson, Miss. in 1A through 4A (four teams from both the North and the South), six from 5A and 6A (three teams from both the North and the South).
