AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Amory voters could decide in late June or early July if the town should allow beer and alcohol sales.

Doug, Cuthbert, an organizer with Citizens for the Economic Development of Amory, says the group hopes to submit a petition to city leaders in late April or early May calling for a wet-dry referendum.

Cuthbert says the group is ahead of its schedule for getting the almost 1,000 — 20 percent of 4,897 registered voters — signatures of registered voters in the city needed to call the vote.

They say they’ll to their own signature validation next week and then make a final push during the Amory Railroad Festival the second weekend in April.

Once the petitions are verified by the city clerk, the city must call a referendum between 45 and 60 days of the certification.

Similar petitions are getting started in Fulton and Pontotoc.

New Albany, Tishomingo County, and Ripley in Mississippi and Sulligent and Reform in West Alabama are among towns that have approved liquor or beer referendums in the last two years.
